Basic System Configuration

- Fiber Optic Distributed Temperature Sensor System (OTDS)

Fiber optic distributed temperature sensor system(OTDS) use the optical fiber as the sensor. This new concept in temperature measurement requires only one fiber to be laid.
The use of the optical fiber sensor provides the advantages of small diameter, light weight, explosion resistance and electromagnetic noise resistance.
Since this system is computer based, the display, data logging and complex data reduction sequences for control, or for archival purposes, are simple to implement.

Principles of OTDS

Distance measurement

Uses the OTDR(Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) principle, when a light pulse is transmitted through an optical fiber, a portion of light is returned to the input end of the fiber due to back scattering. By measuring the elapsed time for the scattered light to return, it is possible to determine the exact point where the back-scattering has occurred.

Temperature measurement

Uses the intensity of the Raman back-scattered light to determine the temperature of the optical fiber sensor.

Block diagram

Optical Module

This module consists of the light pulse source, APD and optical filter to separate the Raman back-scattered light etc.

Signal processing module

This module has the A/D converter and the hi-equalizing circuit for accurate temperature measurement.

PC

The PC controls the database and displays the temperature, distance, etc.
